Propagation Network between Forward Citation / Cited |
|
Hi Bruno,
Congratulations for this really GOOD feature! It can be used to easily identify the core patents of a search! Now MP has more value than before!
It is really ok as it is, but I see two possible improvements to be more informative. Could you show not just the patent number but other associated informations in the same box? (I mean, patent numbers are not very informative). I suggest two:
- To include the patent number + associated PR year => the user can rearrange the map by date. Also the reader visualizes not just the relations between patent numbers but the perspective of time.
- To indicate the patent number + associated Applicant => the user can rearrange the map according to company names. The reader visualizes the map as a competitive landscape with the key points of research competition between companies.

I see also another improvement, very easy (I think)
For every patent you can count:
+1 for every received cited
-1 for every forward citation
Then you add colours to patents depending on the total score. The result would be:
- hot colors (red, orange etc) correspond to cited patents because they are the oldest and the most "famous" patents. The more they are cited, the hotter the colour.
- cold colours (blue, grey) to citing patents, they are the newest
- intermediate colours to intermediate patents, they are cited but also they cite.
What do you think?

Hi Juan,
thank's for all your comment, d/l the latest "intermediary" revision 070213 that show the PR. Date of a patent in the graphic. See this picture else :

Silver patents are patents not already downloaded.

How do you use MP to this forward and citated patent network? This is the function I have been dreaming of! Can you teach me?
Thanks

Hi Bruno,
Thanks, now the user can take more conclusions from the graphic.
Now I have one important doubt, I was supposing that:
- if Patent A cites Patent B
- then Patent A points to Patent B ... right?
So Patent A has always a PRY later than Patent B
I see that the rule is ok in general but I have a graphic where a patent with PRY 1984 is pointing to a patent with PRY 1987 and other patent with PRY 2003.
I don't understand how to interpret this situation.
If you like I send you the graphic.

Hi Bruno,
I'd like to say that I have just done a BIG citation map with a BIG group of patents in a field ... and I have done a BIG discovery, I think.
I REALISE NOW that PRY is not just a complementary information of patent numbers, but it is also a TOOL that can be used to CONTROL the map.
FORMS Frequency is using the PRY data (in my map the range is 0-2005), so now the user can CONTROL the map in TWO very interesting ways:
- Setting Min to 0/1 => include/exclude grey (not downloaded) patents
- Setting Max to eg 1950 => include patents with PRY <= 1950 (probably the map is blank)
Now by increasing the Max Forms Frequency year by year ... it is possible to watch how different patents appear in this technology field and how more and more links apppear between them.
The user can follow easily/graphically the evolution/growing of different "technology subfields" (groups of linked patents) in that field year by year ... it is really like a film.
... so this map and this mechanism growing PRY can help in the intuitive discovering of PIONEER/MAIN patents in that field!!
Really I don't know other analysis tools showing the evolution of a technology in such an intuitive and easy way.
So ... Congratulations! In my opinion, this is a MAJOR improvement! _________________ Juan Carlos Vergara

Hi Juan, Bruno
I learn everyday from this forum. Juan is best supporter of MP he always come up with such a gerat idea on how to improve MP and make MP a very powerful patent tools. And from those ideas I learned new ways to analysis patents. Thank you all for your dedication and professionalism for a freshman new to patent analysis you guys are my mentor.
