MPatent running slowly: More RAM, or a faster processor? |
|
I have downloaded 25,000 patents but MPatent runs very very very slowly.
Opening the project takes 10 minutes, and a DESC/ search takes over 5 minutes with my 1.6Ghz Intel Core Duo. The "page-file" size is running at 1.5Gb because I only have 1Gb RAM.
Should I get a faster processor?
Should I get a 64bit proccessor?
Should I get a quad-core processor?
Should I keep my slow processor and only get more RAM?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim |

Dear Tim,
Whouaou...
MPatent has been not developped to process this kind of big project. I don't know what is the right solution to win time, but i'm sure it depends RAM and Processor. Mainwhile, 1.6Ghz Dual Core is already a good processor.
If you want to do statistics with the project size, may be you must use MAnalyzer, I test it recently with about 24 500 patents and it runs correctly. _________________ Regards / Cordialement

Big Projects |
|
Hi Bruno,
Yes, I know that MPatent is not intended for such large projects. But I think it can cope! I like your software, but I don't think I can afford MAnalyzer.
Thank you for your advice. I will try upgrading the RAM first
Respectfully, I would like to suggest some new features:
1) For large projects, it would be useful if the search bar did not try to search while I am still typing. The computer freezes, and this prevents me from typing. (To solve this I prepare my search and then paste it into the search bar). A button to initiate the search would be useful - perhaps only for large projects?
2) With ep.espacenet.com I can type ~4 words into the "title" field, and ~4 words into the "title and abstract" field. However MPatent only offers to search in one field or the other. This makes my projects larger than neccessary. Is it possible to offer both fields?
3) Could the analysis panel only be activated only for the selected patents (not on the whole project). Perhaps this option could be available by right-clicking on them? I really believe this would be a very useful feature. I think all your customers will benefit from this.
4) Finally, could you display the total number of patents in the view. Perhaps under the search bar? For example "Viewing 5,000 Patent Families, 1 Selected". This would be useful to quickly get basic information on a sub-set of the patents.
Best, Tim |

hum, may be I can search a solution for this problem. I will search in few days.

In few months MP will be connected to OPS V2 and this new connection will offer boolean expression . So be patient !

It could be a good idea to do that, but it's not possible to have that rapidly.
I added this improvement in my ToDo List.

This info is writen in the status bar named "Viewing Family Patent(s)"
This number is the number of family shown. _________________ Regards / Cordialement

Analysis of subset of a project |
|
Hi Brunno,
Thank you for your replies. A boolean search via OPSV2 will be very useful I'm sure this will be very popular with all your customers.
For number 3, the analysis of the selected patents - I'm glad you think this is a good idea. Maybe this could also be provided for the Graphics?

Big improvement |
|
Hi Mannina,
Just to let you know that version 090323 seems to cope with large projects much better.
My large project now opens fairly quickly Also, when I type a long query into the local search engine the search still begins before I've finished, but it doesn't stop me typing.
Great These improvements are very helpful.
One area you could still improve for large projects is when I select many patents and right-click. It takes a very long time (E.g. several minutes) for the options box to appear, and the software requires me to hold my mouse in the same position during this time
When I'm assigning each of the patents to owner groups and then to technology groups (so I can compare them in a matrix) then I have to wait a long time a large number of times!
Also - regarding my earlier question. Are you planning to enable the analysis panel to be applied to the results of the local search engine (or perhaps to a particular group/group2?). Currently it can only offer statistics on the full set of patents in the project.
Regards,
Tim |

I added a FastMM unit, I'm happy to read that.

Ok, I will see that Monday

I don't understand what you want exactly, could you give me more details ?
Awaiting your new post,
Thank's for your comment _________________ Regards / Cordialement

Hi Brunno (!),
OK, if I have two questions about snowboards e.g.:
1) what companies/countries are involved in snowboard materials
2) what companies/countries are involved in snowboard ergonomics
...then maybe I'll create two small projects and open the analysis panel twice.
However, if I have 50 questions then my method would be:
a) download all the snowboard patents at once,
b) filter out the patents of interest with the local search engine,
c) open the analysis panel each time
However it seems to me that even if I apply a local search, when I open the analysis panel it still gives me statistics regarding the whole project.
What I need is for it to give me statistics on my local search results (or on a selected group/group2).
Sorry if this is already possible and I've not understood how!
Regards,
Tim |

Hi Tim,
Actually I don't know how can you do that but I must reflect a little more.
I will come back on this thread as soon I have an idea. _________________ Regards / Cordialement
